Electronic Assistive Technology Service
The Electronic Assistive Technology service (EATS) is based in the Bristol Centre for Enablement.
Electronic assistive technology enables the control of function in the physical environment when a person's physical function is significantly reduced. As long as the person has the ability to still move one part of their body (for example movement of one finger, able to tap a foot, head control, can still suck and blow from the mouth, etc), a control system can be issued to enable the user to operate electronic or electrical devices within their environment. The user can then carry out tasks independently such as answer their phone or open their own curtains or front door (once the correct 'sister' mechanisms are also installed). The service can also provide Computer Access Equipment which enables the user to employ alternative methods to access a computer.
These systems, with practice, can be used by the individual to generate a computer generated voice (or their own voice if they have used voice banking).
Referrals are available to anyone in Somerset and must be done by a healthcare professional on behalf of the person (with consent).
Early referrals are recommended for any individual with a deteriorating condition that effects their motor abilities e.g MND.
