Pathway for the deactivation of Internal Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs)

Deactivation should be discussed with patient and carers prior to ICD implantation, and revisited again when the ICD is no longer clinically appropriate. Please see the pathway guidance below for both routine and OOH/urgent management. Advice is available from the arrythmia specialist nurses at MPH by calling 01823 343595. The Cardiology Department should be contacted ASAP during normal working hours to formally deactivate the device by calling 01823 342953

When a clinical decision has been made with the agreement of the Cardiologist to deactivate the shock therapy of an ICD, a magnet can be used temporarily to deactivate the device in urgent ‘out of hours’ situations.
